Spirits have haunted magic since it’s very creation with cards like Nether shadow and Will-O-The-Wisp, so it’s only right to build a spirit tribal commander deck and, thanks to innistrad crimson vow there is now the perfect commander for this deck Millicent, Restless Revenant.
Millicent is the perfect commander for a spirit as it rewards having spirits on the battlefield by making Millicent cost one less, while also incentivising attacking with nontoken spirits by generating a 1/1 spirit token whenever an opponent is dealt combat damage by a spirit and, thanks to the fact that most spirits have flying (looks at kamigawa block menaclly) it is fairly easy to fly over most creatures head.
Now if an opponent does have a few flyers it is still possible to get through by tapping the creatures. One of the surprising synergies that spirits have starting from the Kamigama, is their ability to tap down creatures. With Innocence Kami and, Teller of tales being able to tap down multiple creatures. While creatures like Dreamshackle Geist deals with one flyer each combat or Dungeon Geists which taps down a creature until Dungeon Geists leaves the battlefield.
One of the problems that arises when building a spirit aggro deck is their overall low power, however, this can be fixed with lords and pump abilities. There are three spirits lords and, along with flying that happen to be spirits as such this deck has several ways to pump up all the spirits. Which then creates an army of beaters with Millicent token creation ability.
There are still a few spirits that shine above the all others in the combat step, with Kiyomoro, First to Stand and, Sturmgeist power and toughness being equal to the number of cards in your hand and, with the abundance of card draw in this deck it is expected that their power and toughness will on average be a 5/5.
The other spirit that deserves the beatdown spotlight is Oyobi, Who split the Heavens. A legendary spirit that creates 3/3 flying spirits whenever another spirit is casted This quickly spins out of control with Millicent creating an ever growing army of spirits that will deal lethal damage. This only gets better with Lords like Drogskol Captain also gives all the creatures hexproof which also functions as a form of protection.
Following that line, There are spirits offer several ways to protect the board with lord’s such as Kira, the great glass spinner and unsettled mariner. Offer protection against targeted spells or abilities by countering those abilities.
While cards like Guardian of Faith and selfless spirit provide protection from board wipes with, Guardian of Faith phasing out all of the other creatures and, Selfless spirit giving all other creatures you control gain indestructible.
One of the surprising sub-themes which cards like tallowisp and sovereigns of lost alara which both support enchantment aura’s. With tallowisp searching for an enchantment whenever a spirit is casted and putting it into your hand, which works well for smaller utilite enchantments like Gift of immortality. While sovereigns of lost alara searches for an enchantment whenever a creature attacks alone and, then attaches that enchantment onto that creature, which works well for bigger enchantments such as Eldrazi conscription which gives the enchanted creature +10/+10 and annihilator 2. (whenever the enchanted creature attacks the defending player must sacrifice 2 permanents. Importantly this doesn’t take effect the turn it comes into play as it is already attacking).
